February 7, 2009 Weekly State House Preview.
Every Sunday evening, The SUNNIE harmon & john DeWORKEN Group will post a commentary on this location explaining what we think will be occurring at the South Carolina State House this coming week. You will read from on insider’s point of view. We do this to better inform you. We encourage you to comment on the section below.
Senate
With Judicial elections over, Greenwood’s John Few was elected as Chief of the Court of Appeals, the Senate will focus on a number of bills this week.
The Senate continues its debate on the “Point of Sale” bill, which is a piece of legislation that is as a result of the 2006 Act 388. It would provide that reassessment of property values would occur during reassessment, not during the time in which the home is sold. It is said that the realtors and the municipalities continue their efforts to hammer out a compromise.
With the Employment Security Commission found, according to the Greenville News, with its proverbial pants around its ankles, the Senate will move with the intent of reforming the Commission this week. The Commission has nearly $1 billion in unfunded liabilities and has been under fire ever since the state’s Legislative Audit Council released it study, which, among other negligent actions, found the Commission paid out more than $170 million to employees who had been fired for cause.
Interestingly, the Senate Education Committee is meeting on a bill that would restrict the sales of sugary items in the state’s schools. Also this week, the Senate will meet to screen applicants who desire to serve on the SC Department of Transportation Commission.
