February 1, 2009 Weekly State House Preview.
Every Sunday evening, The SUNNIE harmon & john DeWORKEN Group will post a commentary on this location explaining what we think will be occurring at the South Carolina State House this coming week. You will read from on insider’s point of view. We do this to better inform you. We encourage you to comment on the section below.
Senate
This week marks the time for judicial elections (Wednesday). Up on the ballet are for the elections of Circuit Court, Court of Appeals, and Family Court positions. Click here for more information (S.1037).
The Senate will debate many important bills in committee this week, including Tort Reform, Employment Security Reform, and DHEC Reform.

House
This weekly review is supposed to be just that, but we would be remiss not to mention a bill that Rep. Michael Thompson introduced this week. He introduced a bill that would study study committees. You heard that right. Though we haven’t spoken to Thompson, we would imagine that he is making a point with this bill.
Speaker Harrell, announcing earlier this year that this session would be about jobs, came through on his promise by introducing a bill that is intended to position the state in a better position to recruit, grow and expand businesses here in South Carolina. Sponsored by about all of the House, H.4478 was crafted by the state’s leading business officials, including folks from the SC Chamber, Manufacturers’ Alliance, Realtors, SCEDA and, of course, Burnie Maybank. It will come up for discussion in the House Ways and Means Committee shortly.
The House Ways and Means Committee continues its work on the budget, by conducting hearings with the likes of the two Governor’s Schools, the Attorney General’s Office, the SC Department of Education, and MUSC.
Other than the budget, the House LCI Committee will be discussing off-shore drilling (H.3194) on Thursday.
